The chessboard is a symbol of duality between black and white, good and evil, holy and unholy. Symbol of the tree of good and evil from the Eden, where Satan tricked man into eating the apple.
Used by secret societies and has been used in temples since ancient Egyptian times.
The Masonic view that there must be an equal amount of good and evil to achieve balance in the world.
That's why you have just as much white as black in these checkerboard floors.

The chessboard is a symbol of the ordinary life on earth, with happiness and sadness, death and life.
Checkered floor is representative of earth, the material world and contrasts the ceiling, which is made to represent the heavens and the spiritual realm. The Covering of the Lodge is shown in sharp contrast to its black and white flooring and is described as a celestial canopy of diverse colours, even the heavens. The one is the reverse and the opposite pole of the other.
The symbol serves to demonstrate the ideals which form the foundation of individual Masons growth, the Masonic fraternity, and even the entire human society.
